Senior CCMB scientist Kumarasamy Thangarajan said there was no truth to the Aryan-Dravidian theory as they came hundreds or thousands of years after the ancestral north and south Indians had settled in India.

The study analysed 500,000 genetic markers across the genomes of 132 individuals from 25 diverse groups from 13 states. All the individuals were from six-language families and traditionally “upper” and “lower” castes and tribal groups. “The genetics proves that castes grew directly out of tribe-like organizations during the formation of the Indian society,” the study said. Thangarajan noted that it was impossible to distinguish between castes and tribes since their genetics proved they were not systematically different.

The study was conducted by CCMB scientists in collaboration with researchers at Harvard Medical School,

It was a "great idea" and it still is.

మానసికంగా we are a fragmented country still.

India as one nation with ONE PEOPLE

ఆ discretion మనకొచ్చే చర్చలు లాభదాయకమేతప్ప, playing in to those politics to jeopardizes our present is always useless.

Its not the denial of the difference, but accepting it and still being one that matters.

very nice
but distruction of the diversities in culture is not actually the moto of indian thought culture.
it is base for the globel village

Thangarajan is one of the authors of the paper that he commented on. Surprisingly, many interpretations that I read at that time were different from his. See for example this post http://suvratk.blogspot.com/2009/09/genetic-ancestry-of-indians-new-paper.html by Suvrat Kher. The question is not purely academic. Some of the legal implications were pointed out in 'The law and other Things Post' post http://lawandotherthings.blogspot.com/2009/09/origins-of-caste.html

@విశ్వనాథ్: I think you are not getting my point....Indian is one nation with ONE PEOPLE కన్నా "India is one nation with MANY PEOPLE (as collectives)" అనేది విలువైనది కాబట్టే వివిధ సంస్కృతుల్ని లేదు లేదు అనే బదులు అవున్నాయని గుర్తిస్తూనే వాటిని "మనవి" చేసుకోవాలంటున్నాను.

Unity can never be at the cost of diversity.

- This is what that has been happening in India ... do you have any specific instance where one different culture was not accepted/thoroughly rejected by Indian people. Before going there, what do you mean by "Acceptance"?

- Hitler visualized the Aryan race as superior to other races ... I don't say that as "ఏకత్వం".

@విశ్వనాథ్: you sound very naive.Acceptance and rejection అనేవి instances కావు. They are "processes".ఈ కాలంలో అవి చాలా లోపాయకారిగా జరుగుతాయి. మీరు ’exclusionary nationalism” అనే మాట ఎప్పుడైనా విన్నారా?

"One notices that the infiltration of RSS progeny in practically all areas of society and state structure has created a social common sense and orientation which already has the deeper elements of Hindu Nation."

"Hindu nationalism is a form of ethno- centric nationality based on mythical homogeneity, tilting towards race based nationalism. In fascism the divide is between republican democracy and narrow definitions of nationality and nationalism."

Fantastic topic and well written, I haven't seen a better article on this topic so far..but not the best I have read from you. Some how it looked like the author in Mahesh has over taken the rational presenter of a concept. The smooth flow of unveiling the idea and fortifying it with rational thought is missing.

I totally agree that till 1947 there was no India, it was just a "great idea" -- well said. One major political party also tried convince people that 1857 revolt was the first war for Indian independence. There can't be a bigger lie then this.

But this is the truth about any, any country. All the countries were just ideas before they were formed and this idea can never be 100% concrete even after the country formation. And there is no guarantee that the idea will remain intact forever. We have seen a few examples of those in the last few decades in Germany or Yugoslavia or USSR

Sincerely I couldn't get clarity on the below thought

India as one nation with ONE PEOPLE

I feel Unity in diversity and Diversity in unity mean the same.

I don't understand why we shouldn't feel India is ONE NATION with ONE PEOPLE. One people doesn't mean there should be monolithic culture.

I think India can certainly be called One Nation with wide range of diversity. If India cannot be called One Nation, I don't know which country can be called One Nation. I am not saying this with some kind of pride, this is just a rational question. There is diversity every where varying with the size of the country. I think some countries or a few people foolishly try to unify this diversity in the name of communism, dictatorship, religionism or regionalism but it is not possible to sustain this in the longer run ...well China is still there :-)

I also feel The Indian State was never a fore runner in such kind of activities till date. Yes, some times we can say it might have been just a spectator and might not have done enough to protect its diversity. I just remembered….. Sadly there are few examples like doing bhoomi pooja for projects, muhurtams for openings etc., but may be not very major.

I agree with you, Unity in diversity never ever meant establishing a monolithic culture. It means we take pride in our diversity and it should also mean that there is unity, in rule of law, equal opportunities to all and fundamental rights to all.

Yes I do agree some/all bloody ***** political parties do keep raising this issues and try instill false pride in the peoples mind based on stupid parameters like culture, religion region etc., we should denounce them. I don't become better then Katti Mahesh because of the region I am born in or caste I am born in or the religion. I should be talented enough. (Talents and one being better then other is a different story)

I totally agree your conclusions but steps in reaching those conclusions were a bit blurry and the expressions were playing to the gallery. Nevertheless it still a good post and raises fundamental questions.

I under criticizing is a lot easier the writing a post, but still ... :-)

Another perspective
Your post also brings up some of my forgotten thoughts in process (were in process some time back). When reading Indian history, I always felt it was the circumstances that lead to India's formation.Without Gandhi and other many great leaders, it might have reduced to another Afghanistan. But some times I also wonder, why only 3 countries were formed out of Indian sub continent (not including Nepal, Burma etc). Why didn't people clamor for formation of more countries. people could have asked for a separate Punjab, Maharashtra or Tamilnadu. May be there were some similarities through out the sub continent in a way the women and down trodden were oppressed (negative aspects), social structure, basic religious concepts, some cultural aspects and of course geography would have played a major role in threading all these.

Or may be it was (early) Brahmanism which has spread through out the sub continent in one form or the other, that has held it together. (just a thought)

I appreciate your thought contributions to this society.

"It is a great idea and it still is."

Fake it and then Make it ఫిలాసఫీ అన్నమాట. Fake it and make it కంటే Realize-Accept and Work on it

ఇంక విషయానికి వస్తే, probably every other country in the world also has diversity of it's own measure. India may be a little bit special and more complicated (I am saying this, not because it is our country, but because I realize the magnitude of it in India ). What we are trying to acheive through our constitution is perhaps the most just experiment.

We became one country, not because we are born here or because somebody told us. We became one people by choice as we know that it is better for all of us and we share the same value system in our judgement and our perceptions of right and wrong. I understand that unification of our value system is still the work in progress and it is a huge work.

It is important for politicians to take recourse to Constitution while working on this experiment, rather than taking recourse to all silly talk of confused cultural moralists and directionless advocates of tradition.

PS: It would be great to see a post from you on the preamble of our constitution.

This is a factual error.

Regulating Act of 1773:
Power was given to Governor General of Fort William (Bengal presidency) and his council (4 members) to supervise and control the Bombay and Madras presidencies in matters of peace and war.

Charter Act 1833:
Governor General of Fort William renamed to Governor General of INDIA.
Legislative powers of different presidencies abolished. Governor Genral of INDIA and his council to legislate for all British India.

Government of India Act 1858:
Well a lot can be written about this, but I think the name itself is enough.
Since 1858 the Central Government was always referred to as Government of INDIA.

So I think, whatever part of India that was under British control it was one administrative unit (పాలనా యూనిట్).

These things may be out of context in relation to Mahesh's conclusions in the post, but I believe factual errors should be avoided as much as possible in concertizing an idea or building up a thought.

I see this discussion as one such. In all these discussions, our constitution which we gave to ourselves need to form the basis for the discussions and all others sources can only give information and different perspectives.

An individual or a group choose to be part of a country with others for common benifit. In this process each group or individual need to have certain garantees and a framework that ensures that the common affairs are run in a just and acceptable way. These gaurantees in the case of India were our Fundamenal rights specified in Part three of the constitution and the preamble is the guiding force.
In India the vision laid out by our constitution is still the work in progress. for this work to be carried out properly a healthy debate and questioning the statusquo is very important. There is no point in feigning as if the constitutional vision is already realized.

Weekend Politician (వీకెండ్ పొలిటీషియన్) said...

Whether we are different people or One People is a moot point. Since We have chosen to have one destiny. To help ourselves to build a just society we have the following choices:

1. To cling to statusquo and resist change so that different view points in the society are merged into one.
2. To destroy the statusquo completely and built or break into new nation/nationalities
3. To question, understand and work as specified by our own constitution.

everyone in this counry can opt for one of the above options. Whatever, would be our choices we will have one destiny. Hence one we can be one people. It's upto the people of India to make a wise choice or to regret later...

ఇండియా అనేది ప్రజలతో సంబంధం లేని, ప్రజల ఎంపికతో పనిలేని, ప్రజాపాల్గోలు లేని ఒక భౌగోళిక, రాజకీయ స్వరూపం (a territorial and political entity having nothing to do with either people's choice or their participation) మాత్రమే.

Tadepalli garu,
I think that there is much truth in what you say. at the same time I think many current nations are also not natural nations. look at the boundaries of countries in africa and Middle East. They are often almost like straight lines. I think once the countries are formed, they do acquire some sort of identity for what reasons I do not know. We see much less talk of separatism from South and even North East. Possibly economic integaration and the pain and effort of forming new nations have a role.

Geographically India is huge enough to be a lot more countries. It will exist as long as people think (or may be brain washed, if we believe people cannot think) there are no issues in being one country or other issues are more important then concentrating on the National integrity right now. Before going to the point of breaking up the political boundaries of the country, there should be clarity on what should be the criteria for this breakup.
What is a natural nation? What are the characteristics of a natural nation? Is Andhra Pradesh a natural nation? Is Maharashtra a natural nation?

Cultural boundaries are never discrete; there can never be a fixed boundary for cultural regions. Cultural transition is contiguous. It is hard to distinguish the cultures of people living on either side of any POLTICAL BOUNDARY in this world. Most of the diversity characteristics attributed to India in the above discussions can be attributed to any country with at least 2 citizens.

I am not saying India should be one country at any cost, but what can be the alternatives to this idea. There can be many pros and cons.
Pros could be, politicians need not run to Delhi to get permission from the Adishtanam to go to the loo. On a serious note, power centre will be closer to the people.
Cons can be there might be a lot of infighting for the various natural resources. Nascent manufacturing sector can take a huge beating in forms of export and import duties, unless we model ourselves on the lines of European Union.

As a matter of fact, nothing is forever. The political map of the world has been re drawn umpteen times. 99% of this redrawing resulted in or may be I should say it was redrawn as a result of lot of bloodshed and taking down the humanity to a non-existent state.

The interesting concept of brainwash through propaganda

Does this technique really work? This technique doesn't work to remove corruption from the society. This doesn't work in improving the cleanliness habits of the nation. This doesn't work in stopping people from vandalizing the historical monuments. This doesn't work in removing the caste system.

But this technique works and was clearly proved by Joseph Goebbels (Reich Minister of Propaganda under Hitler). This was effectively used to make the Germans believe Aryans are a superior race and Jews were responsible to all their problems.

So it looks this technique only works majority find it easy to believe and the same majority have nothing to loose by believing it. If majority of the people believe India is One Nation under the influence of propaganda, may be it is because they have nothing to loose because of it.

YAB said above "... unless we model ourselves on the lines of European Union." I have been wondering about the principle of subsidiarity adopted by the european Union and how it would work in the indian context. it seems a good way for decentralization, if there are reasonable local institutions.

There arises no question of liking or disliking the concept of the Indian Republic or of the concept being useful or useless. I simply want to put across the point that India's people have no say in these matters, whether to live as independent linguistic nations or continue the amorphous Indian Republic. They never had that soveriegnty. Not now either in any case. There is a stony-hearted military angle as well to this forced integration. In order to be above the ground you must say "India is a single nation" or face the bullet. I don't think this should be the spirit of true nationalism.

So, I think India more than qualifies to be called as a military empire a la the British Empire or the Roman Empire, but not a democratic republic. So is the case with the Islamic empire of Pakistan where its true nations are similarly being suppressed to keep the invented identity of Pakistani-ness alive. Yes, there are periodical elections on the lines prescribed by the empire. But there is no scope for self-determination or even examining the possibility self-determination of different nations forming part of these empires.

This term Indian is a very vague, non-specific, misleading and faceless identity while we all know for sure that we are not at all one people as propagated at first by the indiscriminate English-speaking white colonialists and later by their brown political successors at home.

As usual Mahesh raised an important question and discussion. since Mahesh chose to keep his silence and others have expressed their opinions I have nothing more to contribute without deviating from the actual topic.
