"I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation."

quote ఇది;

'It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect." నేనిక్కడ ఒక వాక్యాన్ని బోల్డ్ లో పెట్టి, ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలిపినట్లే ఈ quote చెప్పేటప్పుడు తమ వాదనల్ని వినిపించేవారూ చేస్తారు. కానీ మెకాలే అదే వ్యాఖ్యలో తరువాత చెప్పిన వాక్యాల్ని మాత్రం ఎక్కడా చూపించరు. వాటిని ఇక్కడ చూడండి; "To that class we may leave it to refine the vernacular dialects of the country, to enrich those dialects with terms of science borrowed from the Western nomenclature, and to render them by degrees fit vehicles for conveying knowledge to the great mass of the population.'" ఇప్పుడు మొత్తం పేరాని ఒకసారి చదువుకోండి. Now you may know, who is taking you for a ride.

"The first instance to which I refer, is the great revival of letters among the Western nations at the close of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century. At that time almost everything that was worth reading was contained in the writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Had our ancestors acted as the Committee of Public Instruction has hitherto acted; had they neglected the language of Cicero and Tacitus; had they confined their attention to the old dialects of our own island; had they printed nothing and taught nothing at the universities but Chronicles in Anglo-Saxon, and Romances in Norman-French, would England have been what she now is? What the Greek and Latin were to the contemporaries of More [Thomas --, 1478-1535] and Ascham [Roger --, 1515-68], our tongue is to the people of India."

"It is scarcely possible to calculate the benefits which we might derive from the diffusion of European civilisation among the vast population of the East. It would be, on the most selfish view of the case, far better for us that the people of India were well governed and independent of us, than ill governed and subject to us; that they were ruled by their own kings, but wearing our broadcloth, and working with our cutlery, than that they were performing their salams to English collectors and English magistrates, but were too ignorant to value, or too poor to buy, English manufactures. To trade with civilised men is infinitely more profitable than to govern savages."

మెకాలే మీద చేసే మరో ఆరొపణ క్రైస్తవ మిషనరీల ఉద్దేశాలకు అనుగుణంగా విద్యావ్యవస్థను తయారు చేసాడని. ఒకవైపు బ్రిటిష్ ప్రభుత్వం మరో వైపు బ్రిటిష్ చర్చిని సముదాయించి, బిజ్జగిస్తేగానీ ప్రశాంతంగా ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీ వ్యాపారం చేసుకోలేని సమయం అది. తను కలకత్తాలోని ఒక ఎవాంజెలిస్ట్ ఫాదర్ కు రాసిన లేఖలోని భాగాలను చూడండి;

"No Hindoo, who has received an English education, ever remains sincerely attached to his religion. Some continue to profess it as matter of policy; but many profess themselves pure Deists, and some embrace Christianity. It is my firm belief that, if our plans of education are followed up, there will not be a single idolater among the respectable classes in Bengal thirty years hence. And this will be effected without any efforts to proselytise; without the smallest interference with religious liberty; merely by the natural operation of knowledge and reflection. I heartily rejoice in the prospect."

"English remains indispensable for technical education and as a means of inter-State communication. The software revolution in India might never have happened had it not been for Macaulay's Minute. And India might not have still been united had it not been for that Minute either. For, it was the existence and availability of English that allowed the States of South India to successfully resist the imposition of Hindi upon them"
- Guha (2007)

I can no way agree with you... If the English and other people didn't invade India, may be India would've been a set of different countries, each with its own official language and a separate identity, similar to the European countries and all being developed nations, in contrast to what you said.. "an african country or nepal"... All these so called softwares and programming languages would've been in our own native language.. You can see that even now in those countries.. Germans use softwares in German language only..but not English... and of course, they have huge contribution in IT... they use German "only" for communicating with others...

Do not correlate the
contributions by Indians in IT industry with the education system introduced by the English.
The English period in India took away the wealth of this country but left us a poor nation, with just that education system.. Today we are only making use of the same to connect to global economy.... we only have a small edge compared to other non-english speaking countries.. chinese for example, learning english fast to connect with the world...
may be things would've been different if India wasn't invaded by English...... The point saying that the British education system is the reason for our opportunities in IT is absolutely false propaganda....

hi rakeswar, somewhere i had seen you have studied in SASI, velivennu, where nothing is told about telugu literature. but now you are writing telugu poetry with complete chadassu and alankaras etc. i think you are equipped with the good experiences and able to explain mahesh one person need not get all his living and worldly knowledge from the same place.Every person has his individual choice to get the knowledge he want from the multiple sources like some from sanskrit slokas and some from physics text books.

It is unfortunate that some of the Indians still think the British (White Christian) rule was good for India.

Please read The Clash of Civilizations, proposed by political scientist Samuel P. Huntington, to understand how India was transformed from 2nd richest country in the world to one of the poorest country by 1947becasue of White Christian (British) rule. When British captured political power in 18th century India's GDP was 25% of the world's GDP and when British left India in 1947, the India's GPD was less than 1% of the GDP of the world.

White Christians looted the welath of our nation and reduced it to rubble. They destroyed our sense of a pride, and divided our country based on Religion, destroyed our indigenious industry, shattered our belief system, culture and social systems. They never hide this fact, where as children of Mecaulay proudly cliam that the White Christian rule was good for India.

Shame on such ignorent bunch. Such people may claim that the rule of Sonia , a lone White Christian Italian Women is good for the country. If foreign rule is so good, why no other coutnry (give the example of at least one country, except India)is importing Prime ministers and Presidents from foreign countries?.

The label "Britsh" was used in our history books by Maxist histerions to mask the true rule of White Christians over India. since 710 AD Muslims ruled over India, it was followed by White Christian rule until 1947, and there after Socialist/Communists rule was imposed by Nehru and his Daughter, grandson and that grandson's tail Sonia. Nehru kept India frozen (socially and economically) for 55 years after independance. Even after 60 years of independance, hundreds of Millions of SC's ST's and BC's living in absolute poor. Most of the lower caste people were kept illiterate by desin by Nehru and his tails to rule India for ever.

Nehru never learn from any body else , as you know, that George Washington (first United States President)refused to serve 2nd term, and he retired after 8 years of rule. Where as Nehru cling to power until he died. And ensured that power passess to his daughter, and she ensured power passes to her son, and that idiot ensured that the imported Italian rule over one Billion Indians.

When we allow the poorest of poor Indians (ST's, SC's and BC's) rule our country and get proper educatcation, get rich and gain social equality?

Let me start off saying that some of yours conclusions seem a bit too radical (Statements regarding, మెకాలే సిద్ధాంతాల వలన వచ్చిన ఆంగ్లవిద్య కావాలి.
Now I would say, I agree with your statement saying Macaulay may not have any extra evil-interests as the infamous quote suggests. The quote's origins need further investigation though. Someone has the onus to come up with the source for me to believe. At the face of it, if anyone wants to believe, I have no issues:-) "The Competition Wallah By George Otto Trevelyan - 1866" had no mention of the infamous quote. However it writes M. saying : "I have no knowledge of either Sanscrit or Arabic. — But I have done what I could to form a correct estimate of their value. I have
read translations of the most celebrated Arabic and Sanscrit works.
I have conversed both here and at home with men distinguished by
their proficiency in the Eastern tongues. I am quite ready to take
the Oriental learning at the valuation of the Orientalists themselves.
I have never found one among them who could deny that a single shelf
of a good European library was worth the whole native literature of
India and Arabia. The intrinsic superiority of the Western literature
is, indeed, fully admitted by those members of the Committee who
support the Oriental plan of-education. ". In the chapter "EDUCATION IN INDIA SINCE 1835 WITH A MINUTE OF LORD",
nowhere the tone of Mr.M had the same kind of negativety the quote suggests.

I am in no position to judge (at least until I do some findings) what our education during those times had to offer. If only the teachings were more advanced than what west had to offer, I question the motives and authority of those "members".

Having said that I would agree with rest of the bloggers views with respect to leaving india poorer (If not we may have bought/brought the education system ourselves). Another one compared china/Germany and I concur with them. At no point I would support the argument British had done any good to India by invading. I strongly condemn the statement that India would have been another Afghan if not for British.

@యాజి:There is every possibility that Macaulay was ignorant.తన సంస్కృత,అరబిక్ జ్ఞానం దాదాపు నగణ్యం అయ్యుండొచ్చు. అందులో ఏమాత్రం సందేహం లేదు.అప్పట్లో వేదాల గురించి చెబుతున్న రహస్యజ్ఞానమంతా ఏ కొద్దిమంది చేతుల్లోనో వుండేది. మెజారిటీ హిందువులకుకూడా ఈ జ్ఞానం accessible కాదు. అలాంటిది మెకాలే చదివిన ఆంగ్లానువాదాలు useless texts and their translations అయ్యుండొచ్చు.

ఈ తెలియనితనంతోనే he might have down his conclusions.Ignorance can't be showcased as evil.

కానీ, అడిగారు కాబట్టి let me make myself clear.

This is neither new-sense not nonsense. Its just plain history. That's all.

India was still an agrarian economy.

"It so happens that the Western world was enjoying an Industrial revolution at that time. This revolution hit India late. This is the proximal reason why Britain ended up wealthier than India.

Was it Britain’s fault that India’s industrialisation took place late? Many people think so. But the policy they hold responsible for this looks suspiciously to me like… Free Trade.

Now I can understand how free trade in that specific instance would have led to the deindustrialization of India. The British had a comparative advantage in manufactured goods and we in agricultural commodities. But it is wrong to talk just of the unemployment among weavers, but not of the benefits to farmers from cheap clothes. A flood of cheap manufactured consumer goods must have brought some benefit to some people - after all they were getting something they valued at a lower price. Does this benefit cancel out the loss of some livelihoods? I wish someone would run the numbers. Besides, India didn’t just buy consumer goods from the British. We also bought machinery from them - machines which were used to set up textile mills in India by traders who earlier used to import finished cloth from Great Britain. So free trade policies ultimately resulted in the start of the reindustrialization of India.

Would protecting the handloom weaver have resulted in the modernization of the textile industry faster? Protection didn’t work during Nehru’s time. What makes you think it would have worked in that bygone era? "

దాని పేరు, An Indian Affair. Truth has many shades; I don't take that conclusion as the only possibility, but it is a very positive and realistic possibility.

Kathi forgot to inform the readers that the above authors were hardcore Maxists/Communists. No one should forget that Maxists and Communists supported British against Indians. They don't want India get independence.

Every one know that Romila Thapar is hiding in liberal Europe after spoiling/poisioning young Indian minds by writing anti-Indian history. Can some one find and post where the other two living.

Under Nehru's socialist/Marxist rule, the Marxists histerions thrived and produced pseudo Indian history. Pakisthan did much better job in writing their history.

Please read the book "Clash of Civilizations" by Samuel P. Huntington. You can get it at www.amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684844419/qid=1010431890/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_67_1/102-3579527-5380164

"India was a major player in the world export market for textiles in the early 18th century, but by the middle of the 19th century it had lost all of its export market and much of its domestic market, primarily to Britain. The ensuing deindustrialization was greatest c1750–c1860."

"the share of Indian textiles in the West African trade was about 38
percent in the 1730s, it had fallen to 22 percent in the 1780s and 3 percent in the 1840s".

To make matters worse, India, which had captured a good share of the English market in the 17th
century, had -- as an English defensive response -- already been legislated out of that market by
Parliamentary decree between 1701 and 1722. It should be stressed that India also had a technological edge
over England in the early 18th century.

"low nominal wages in pre-colonial and early colonial
India gave it the edge in world textile markets, living standards for labor in the south of India
were just as high as that in the south of England. Indian productivity was higher in food grain
production, and thus food grain prices were lower."

Please read the book, then we will have a healthy discussion.

As per your world view,
If British rule was good for India, it must be good for Pakisthan and Bangladesh?.

But in Pakistani history books the British period was either erased or painted has the most barbarious and destructive. Please read some of the Pakistani history books before commenting.

Who suports British rule in India? Those are Mecaulay Children, ultra liberal Hindus, Muslims (Ifran Habib), Christians(James Laine), Marxists (Romila Thapar), Communists (Bipin Chandra).

Nehru created a class of people who hate India and Hindus and show foreign rule in good light when they wrote Indian history books for school children.

When Indians want to correct such inaccuracies in school history books, the media controlled by Marxists and Communists run a huge propaganda against Indians all over the world.

Even in American Schools they are teaching marxists written Hindu history. In this age of Information Technology and Space Technology, where Hindus are dominating, American School Children were taught that Hindus are snake charmer etc.

It was in 1850 that Lord McCauley prepared the first education policy for British India. Right from the ancient era, India had pursued one education system. Learning was imparted from the Guru to the Shishya or the pupil in a gurukul. A Gurukul is a boarding school where children spend their youth learning Sanskrit Veda and the different forms of Indian philosophy, their critiques etc. Apart from a strong philosophical foundation, the gurukul also taught agricultural practices, animal husbandry, forestry, Ayurveda or ancient Indian medicine, warfare, trade and commerce. We can say that it was a mixture of value based learning and practical instruction. A pass out from the gurukul was treated as a complete human being who was able, stable and could tackle the vagaries and face the challenges that life presents to all of us. Passing out from a basic Gurukul at the age of 14, 16 or 18, the pupil could go on and specialise in an area of his choice. The choice of course depended upon the family and community of his birth. He could be a warrior and be assigned to a Guru of warfare. He could learn commerce, medicine or politics. He could become a guru himself by continuing to learn on those lines. Throughout the educational span, learning was very personal and informal. The pupil would live with the Guru’s family like his own child and respect his Guru even more than his own father. The gurukul had three sources of income. Donations raised from local community. Agriculture and animal husbandry. Finally, State grants, which the monarch would extend to the gurukul periodically. The pupil would get no University Degree or paper certificate. The name of the Guru was enough to make him successful in the area of his excellence across India.
McCauley’s education policy changed all this. His purpose was to prepare a breed of servants who could serve as clerks to British bureaucrats posted in India. Instead of bringing clerks and lower level functionaries from Britain, he sought to recruit them in India. Therefore, Indian values, Indian philosophy or Veda as well as practical Indian skills in agriculture, medicine, warfare etc were discarded as stupid. The new brigade of English public schools that mushroomed in India injected western ideas, British etiquette, English literature, science, math etc. Gradually, ancient Indian learning through the gurukul method was rendered defunct despite its completeness and advantages. The primary reason being that students educated on the British pattern in modern public schools could find a living. While a student passing out of a Gurukul could not. India’s monarch, the Kings who absorbed the breed of Gurukul pass outs no longer existed and the British could not tolerate a Gurukul pass out. They did not need his services. Therefore, for the sake of a bright future, parents began to pinch their pockets to educate their children in public schools. Despite the fact that ancient education was almost free and modern education cost a lot, people not only sent their child to Indian public schools, but also sent them to Britain directly.
